Results for exams taken before February 2016

B1 Preliminary for Schools gives detailed, informative results. All students receive a Statement of Results. If a student’s performance ranges between CEFR Levels B2 and A2, they will also receive a certificate.

What is a Statement of Results?

This document outlines:

  • your candidate result, based on your total score in all three papers.
  • a graphical display of your performance in each paper (shown against the scale Exceptional – Good – Borderline – Weak).
  • a standardised score out of 100, so you can see exactly how you performed. It has set values for each grade, allowing comparison across sessions of the exam.

Find out how to understand your B1 Preliminary for Schools Statement of Results.

What is on my certificate?

Certificates are normally sent to exam centres within three months of the exam. Please contact your centre if you need to know the specific date. Your certificate can be awarded at different levels, depending on your achievement.

Students will receive the same certificate as candidates who take B1 Preliminary.

B1 Preliminary for Schools – Level B2
Pass with Distinction
Exceptional students sometimes show ability beyond B1 level. Students who achieve Pass with Distinction in their exam will receive the Preliminary English Test certificate stating that they demonstrated ability at Level B2.

B1 Preliminary for Schools – Level B1
Pass with Merit or Pass
If a student achieves Pass with Merit or Pass in their exam, they will be awarded the Preliminary English Test certificate at Level B1.

Level A2 certificate
It is important to recognise students’ achievements, even if they do not reach Level B1. If a student’s performance falls within Level A2, they will receive a Cambridge English certificate stating that they demonstrated ability at Level A2.
