Immersive games and language learning

Rosalía Valero

Games have emerged as a leading technology medium for education over the last decade. How excited should we be as educators? How can we use the research to make informed decisions about games for learning? This session presents both research and application on what makes a good game in ELT.
Participants will take away specific and applicable criteria for evaluating the relative merits of games for learning in our field, and a clear understanding of how they can apply this knowledge to their own decisions about using games in and out of class.

The Power of Inclusion
|
Brad Bawtinheimer
Cambridge University Press
|
Dr. llene Schartz describes inclusion as the celebration of diversity put into action. Sounds simple enough, right? Yet, what are we doing as a society and within the education system to ensure everyone feels a part of something? Join me as we discuss this important question and how we can address this by scrutinizing our own opinions and actions. We’ll examine different strategies to build inclusivity both in and out of the classroom. Bring an open mind and leave with a new perspective.

Inclusive Assessment: Assessing learners with Special Requirements
|
Alondra Valle
Cambridge Assessment English
|
Inclusion has been addressed in different fields recently; in education, inclusion means to provide secure opportunities for students with disabilities to learn alongside their non-disabled peers.
An important consideration for teachers during course design and planning is to ensure that we have made adequate provision for learners we might be teaching who have disabilities and/or special educational needs. This consideration should include assessment. Although inclusion in the classroom is a known topic, there is still a need for information about inclusion in assessment. Is your assessment inclusive?

Edutainment… When Learning Counts
|
Milagros López
Cambridge University Press
|
The world is shifting, from rote learning to fun learning. More screen-hours in classrooms, more videos, more ‘entertainment’. However, the term edutainment implies much more than just technology. What is understood? Why should educators be on the alert when huge corporations are investing money on ‘new learning experiences’?
During this talk, Mily will share interesting findings from her most recent research on edutaintment and will share some learning experiences and teach what counts in your own context.

The path to learning
English, step by step

Alondra Valle

As language learning is a long journey, it’s important to have regular milestones to aim for. Aiming for a particular CEFR level since the beginning of the journey, helps teachers to have a clear idea of how best to prepare students, and students to have a clear goal in mind. Specific objectives for each level allow students to approach exams with greater confidence and to prepare more effectively avoiding failing and frustration.
By the end of this session, attendees will have a wide scope of the benefits of holding Cambridge Assessment English certificates for proving their skills to the world.
