Looking at written work is a common method of assessment familiar to many teachers, but when we think about writing assessment more carefully, there are many questions to address. What kinds of writing samples should be assessed? What should be done with writing samples once we have them? What criteria should be used to assess writing? We address these issues in this webinar, and show how thinking about the purpose and context of assessment can help us to answer these questions.

Kevin YF Cheung
Kevin YF Cheung is a Senior Research Manager at Cambridge English, where he works on assessment of writing, particularly at levels required for higher education study. Before joining Cambridge English, he lectured at UK universities in psychology and research methods; this experience means that he is intimately familiar with undergraduate writing, and the challenges of assessing written work. Aside from his work in academic contexts, Kevin taught writing as a basic skills tutor for the probation service, where he worked with offenders to improve their literacy skills.
Gad S Lim
Gad S Lim leads on research related to writing and writing assessment at Cambridge English. His research is informed by many years of experience as an examiner, item writer, test designer, and test development manager. He also draws from his experience teaching in higher education and training language teachers in Asia, Australia, North America, and Europe. Gad has presented and published on language teaching, English for Academic Purposes, performance assessment, raters and rating scales, test validation, standard setting, and on the CEFR.
