Australia accepts C1 Advanced

The Australian Department of Home Affairs accepts C1 Advanced, formerly known as Certificate in Advanced English (CAE), scores for student visa applications and many other visa programmes.

This means that for studying in Australia, you only need one exam to apply for your university place and your visa because most Australian universities and TAFE (Training and Further Education) institutions accept C1 Advanced for admissions purposes.

Before travelling to study or work in Australia, you may need to apply for a visa. As part of your application, you may have to prove you have a particular level of English language ability, or your language skills may be taken into account in other ways when your visa application is considered.

There are different types of visa, depending on your reason for entering the country. C1 Advanced is accepted for Student, Temporary Graduate, Skilled, Former Resident, and Work and Holiday visa programmes. Check visa requirements for immigration to Australia with the Department of Home Affairs.

Please note that for your C1 Advanced score to be accepted, your centre must take a photo of you on the test day.

Please be aware of the following information:
The Australian Government's Department of Home Affairs has renewed its recognition of the Paper-Based C1 Advanced qualification (previously known as Cambridge English: Advanced CAE) as proof of English language proficiency for Australian visa and migration purposes. This means that candidates who sit the Paper-Based version of this high-quality English language qualification can continue to use C1 Advanced for study, work and migration to Australia. Until further notice, any C1 Advanced Digital tests taken from 12 February 2024 will not be accepted for Australian visa purposes. Test scores for both the paper-based and computer-based C1 Advanced tests taken before 12 February 2024, within the respective visa validity period, are still accepted by the Department of Home Affairs.
