Overseas students who need a visa to study at a UK university can use Cambridge Assessment English’s C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency to meet English language requirements for entry and immigration.
In the UK, Higher Education Institutions set their own English language requirements for overseas students wishing to study at their institution at degree level or above, and students at these institutions do not need to take a separate language test to obtain a UK student visa. This means that C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency are the only tests students need to take if they want to study at a UK university.
Nicola Johnson Global Recognition Manager at Cambridge Assessment English explains why the Cambridge English Qualifications remain a popular choice for universities. She says:
‘The Cambridge English Qualifications are really in-depth exams that give people the skills they need for a positive experience of studying in the UK. One of the big challenges that universities face in the UK is student retention. This is because overseas students often find it difficult to settle in when they find communicating a challenge. It can have a huge effect on how well they understand lectures and instructions and of course it effects their relationships with their peers. However, with the right communications skills overseas students can have a really positive experience of university life and we’re seeing lots of examples of this which is really encouraging. This is where the Cambridge English Qualifications play an increasingly important role as they help students to develop a really high level of English language skills that will put them on the right track for success.’
The Cambridge English Qualifications assess key English language skills at different levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – which is the international standard of language learning ability.
Other Cambridge English exams are also used for visa and immigration purposes in the UK. OET – the Occupational English Test – can be used by doctors, nurses and midwives who wish to work in the UK healthcare sector, while IELTS (jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English) is recognised for all categories of UK visa and other immigration purposes.
