A free online course will help learners around the world gain the skills they need to take the IELTS Academic test. Inside IELTS has been developed by IELTS in collaboration with FutureLearn. It is being launched as part of IELTS’ ongoing commitment to help students continue learning English during the global restrictions caused by Covid-19.
Inside IELTS is available to all learners who are not able to access regular classes, including refugees studying with PADILEIA, a consortium set up to support refugee learners with digital learning resources. The course is designed to help people learn the skills they need for the IELTS Academic test, which is designed for people applying for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English. The course covers aspects of the test including the content and skills learners need to know to improve their IELTS score. It also highlights how learners are assessed and the type of tasks they will come across in the test.
‘We’re running the course to help learners continue with their exam preparation in what are really challenging times for the education sector’, said Christine Nuttall, Managing Director IELTS at Cambridge Assessment English. ‘The course is really authentic as it gives learners a flavour of the kinds of communication skills they will need when studying for a degree course taught in English. We’re proud of the fact that the course will also be supporting refugees who want to improve their English as it’s a big help for them when accessing education or work. The course will benefit anyone who is facing restrictions at the moment in what are challenging times. We’re now working really hard with the IELTS partners to get exam dates back on track to ensure that learners can take their tests as soon as it becomes possible.’
The course, which was first run in 2016 has already helped tens of thousands of learners. During the new course run in April 2020, volunteers from across IELTS and Cambridge Assessment will be acting as mentors to support the course participants. King’s College London, who are part of PADILEIA, has been instrumental in bringing the course back, seeing the course as a valuable addition to their blended learning study programmes for refugee learners.
PADILEIA’s Project and Mentoring Coordinator, Bisher Dayani, from King’s College London said, ‘IELTS is key for accessing higher education opportunities around the globe. Preparation for the IELTS exam is fundamental to successfully passing the exam, even for those who have good English skills. This course provides the unique opportunity to be facilitated by those who mark the exam. With private tuition expense and access challenges, we hope this facilitated-digital course will expand the skills of all who take it’.
Registration for Inside IELTS is now open for the course which will begin on Monday 20 April 2020.
