About TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test)

TKT is made up of five modules that cover core aspects of English language teaching and specialist topics, enabling you to tailor the qualification to your needs.

TKT in detail

Core modules develop and prove your knowledge about the principles and practice of English language teaching:

• Module 1 – Background to language learning and teaching

  This module covers common terms and concepts, the factors underpinning the learning of English, and the choices teachers can make to meet the needs of their learners.

• Module 2 – Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching

  This module focuses on what teachers consider and do when they're planning a lesson or series of lessons. It also looks at the reference resources available and the materials they could use.

• Module 3 – Managing the teaching and learning process

  This module covers the classroom language used by the teacher or learners, the roles the teacher can fulfil, and how they can manage and exploit classroom events and interactions.

Specialist modules introduce specialist areas of English language teaching:

• TKT: CLIL – Content and Language Integrated Learning

  This module covers the aims and rationale of a CLIL approach, including the planning, teaching and assessment of CLIL, and learning demands and support strategies for learners.

• TKT: YL – Young Learners

  This module covers concepts related to young learner learning and development, including the planning, teaching and assessment of young learners' work.

Ways to take TKT

TKT can be taken as a digital or paper-based test, so you can choose which format works best for you. The syllabus is the same for both and you will receive the same internationally recognised qualification and the same TKT certificate.

Both versions of the test are taken at an authorised exam centre, under the same test conditions.
