What is this webinar about?

Assessment plays a vital role in education, but its impact extends far beyond measuring performance or benchmarking achievement. This webinar explores the fundamental question: What is assessment, and why does it matter so much? Looking at the bigger picture, we will examine how high-quality assessment supports learning, builds trust in educational outcomes, and provides meaningful recognition of knowledge and skills. We will explore how assessment opens doors to further education, employment and life opportunities, and why it remains a cornerstone of educational progress around the world. Drawing on Cambridge's expertise and global leadership in assessment, this session will highlight the critical role assessment plays in helping learners fulfil their potential and achieve their ambitions.

Presenters

Graham Seed

Graham Seed is a Senior Research Manager at Cambridge University Press and Assessment, where he works on different projects relating to language learning and assessment. His current professional interests include operationalisation of the CEFR, mediation and multi-/plurilingualism in learning and assessment contexts. He holds an MA in Language Testing from Lancaster University, DELTA and CELTA, and previously taught EFL in Bosnia, Russia and the UK. He is currently also the Secretariat Manager of ALTE – the Association of Language Testers in Europe.

Dr Brigita Séguis

Dr Brigita Séguis is an educational researcher, impact evaluator and learning and assessment specialist. She has extensive experience in designing, conducting and overseeing research and evaluation projects related to language assessment, education reform, bilingualism and multilingualism, language learning and digital innovations. Brigita has conducted research projects in a number countries, including Spain, France, US, Japan, Brazil, UAE, UK, Vietnam and Uzbekistan. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from Oxford University and is fluent in five languages.
