Cambridge English and Eaquals join forces to help teachers around the world bring skills for sustainability into the language classroom
24 November 2025, Cambridge, England – Cambridge English and Eaquals (Evaluation and Accreditation of Quality Language Services), a leading professional association for language education worldwide, have signed an MOU which pledges to focus on the development of sustainability skills through language education.
The two organisations will work closely to ensure sustainability is high on the agenda at Eaquals’ accredited language centres and private training institutions around the world. Under the agreement, Eaquals will leverage Cambridge’s Sustainability Framework for ELT, which offers practical guidance to help their teachers and leaders embed sustainability in the classroom.
Teachers and educators play an important role in helping learners develop the skills they will need to flourish, and a focus on sustainability can bring conversations of local and global interest into the classroom, helping learners to use English to discuss real-world issues. It can provide opportunities for learners to develop the skills to live more sustainably, become responsible citizens, and play an active part in shaping their worlds. The agreement was signed by Francesca Woodward, Managing Director for English at Cambridge University Press & Assessment and Dr Lou McLaughlin, Executive Director at Eaquals, at a ceremony in Cambridge.
Francesca Woodward, Global Managing Director – English, at Cambridge University Press & Assessment said:
“It’s essential that future generations are equipped with the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to make a positive difference in the world. We know that education is a powerful tool for building a sustainable future and at Cambridge, we’re committed to supporting teachers in our sector by giving them the practical skills and knowledge they need to deliver education for sustainability.
“Our Sustainability Framework for ELT is a fantastic vehicle for this, and we’re excited to work with Eaquals to ensure even more people can benefit from the framework and make a positive impact on the world through education.”
Lou McLaughlin Executive Director at Eaquals said:
“At Eaquals, our mission has always been to promote excellence and innovation in language education, and embracing sustainability is a natural extension of that mission. Language learning connects people, cultures, and ideas, and through this collaboration with our Associate Member, Cambridge English, we can help teachers equip their learners to become active, responsible global citizens. Together, we can ensure that language education not only broadens understanding but also develops the competencies needed to build a more sustainable future and a compassionate world.”
The Sustainability Framework for ELT from Cambridge has been developed to make it easier to integrate sustainability skills development into language lessons. Based on extensive research, the framework helps teachers to make sense of the different skills learners need to become informed, compassionate, and innovative agents for positive environmental, social, and economic transformation.
