Exam format

A1 Movers Digital is made up of three components, designed to motivate young learners and encourage a positive mindset towards future learning and assessment. You can see exactly what's in each component below.

playlist What's in the Listening test?

The A1 Movers Digital Listening test is a digital component consisting of five tasks. Each task starts with an example. In most tasks, children will hear the audio twice. In task 4, they can listen as many times as they need.

Task 1: Story scene

What do candidates have to do? Listen to and understand details in a story. Select correct pictures from a choice of three.
What should children practise? Listening and understanding specific information in stories.
How many questions are there? 5

Task 2: Note-taking

What do candidates have to do? Listen for specific information in a dialogue and type words to complete a set of notes.
What should children practise? Spelling words from the wordlist and understanding how the letters are pronounced.
How many questions are there? 5

Task 3: Multiple matching

What do candidates have to do? Listen to an ongoing dialogue and match the correct word to the correct image.
What should children practise? Listening to descriptions of people, places and activities.
How many questions are there? 5

Task 4: Interactive dialogue

What do candidates have to do? Listen to questions/prompts and choose the appropriate response from a choice of three.
What should children practise? Answering open and closed questions in different ways and responding to statements.
How many questions are there? 4

Task 5: Picture editing

What do candidates have to do? Listen to the descriptions and follow the instructions by dragging and dropping objects into the correct place in the picture (questions 1-4) and writing one word in the correct place (questions 5-6).
What should children practise? Understanding descriptions of objects and activities and prepositions of place.
How many questions are there? 6

The A1 Movers Digital Reading and Writing test is a digital component consisting of six tasks. Each task starts with an example.

Task 1: Information posters

What do candidates have to do? Read a short phrase on a poster and choose the correct picture from a choice of three to add to it (questions 1-2). Look at a visual on a poster and choose from a choice of three short phrases to add to it (questions 3-5).
What should children practise? Recognising different kinds of short texts (signs, phrases) they might see in the world around them.
How many questions are there? 5

Task 2: Online messages

What do candidates have to do? Read a text message exchange and choose the correct image (questions 1-2) or phrase (question 3) from a choice of three. Respond to a question by choosing an image from a choice of three and writing a short sentence or phrase about it (questions 4-5).
What should children practise? Reading and responding to short messages.
How many questions are there? 5

Task 3: Spelling with definitions

What do candidates have to do? Complete the definition sentences with the key word by typing the missing letters (questions 1-3). Match the correct word to the correct definition (questions 4-5).
What should children practise? Spelling words and understanding simple definitions.
How many questions are there? 5

Task 4: Information text

What do candidates have to do? Read sentences on a factual topic and choose the correct word from a choice of three to complete the gaps.
What should children practise? Reading short, factual texts, understanding sentence structure and how to use different parts of speech.
How many questions are there? 5

Task 5: Gap-fill story

What do candidates have to do? Read a short story and choose the correct word to complete the gap in the sentences (questions 1-6). Choose the best title for the story based on a choice of three options (question 7).
What should children practise? Reading and listening to short stories and answering questions about them.
How many questions are there? 7

Task 6: Comic book story

What do candidates have to do? Read a comic style story and write one, two or three word answers to complete the sentences about the story (questions 1-4). Answer a question about something shown in the pictures (questions 5 and 6) and then choose a picture from a choice of 3 to write a sentence about (questions 7 and 8).
What should children practise? Reading comic book stories and drawing/writing their own simple stories.
How many questions are there? 8

megaphone What's in the Speaking test?

The A1 Movers Digital Speaking test is a face-to-face component consisting of four tasks. Children take the test alone with the examiner, but someone they know who speaks their language (like their teacher) will introduce them to the examiner and explain what to do in their own language.

Marks: a maximum of five shields

Task 1: Two familiar pictures

What do candidates have to do? Identify four differences between pictures.
What should children practise? Describing differences between two similar pictures.

Task 2: Picture sequence

What do candidates have to do? Describe each picture in turn.
What should children practise? Telling simple picture stories.

Task 3: Picture sets

What do candidates have to do? Identify the odd one out and give a reason.
What should children practise? Identifying the different one in a set of four pictures.

Task 4: Open-ended questions about candidates

What do candidates have to do? Answer personal questions.
What should children practise? Answering questions about themselves, their families and friends, their homes, their school, free time activities and their likes and dislikes.
