English language institutions operate across North America and more and more of them accept Cambridge English exams as a requirement for recruitment, or training and development of teachers.
This recognition boosts the value CELTA and Delta provide for those who have gained the qualification.
A high standard of teaching is imperative, so many language schools and colleges are adopting Cambridge English teaching qualifications - CELTA and Delta, as the qualification of choice. In 2018 alone, the number of language institutes requesting CELTA or Delta as one of the accepted qualification requirements increased by more than 80. As well as recruiting new teaching staff, some of the institutions also use the CELTA, Delta qualifications to train employees, emphasising the value placed on the exams by language centres, and the standards of teaching they require.
Linda Auzins from Languages Canada, the language teaching association in Canada, endorses CELTA, Delta:
‘Languages Canada and our accreditation agency, Orion Assessment Services, has always recognized the Cambridge CELTA and Delta as meeting our quality assurance standards without question. Knowing the level of quality assurance behind the delivery of the CELTA and Delta, we recommend it to teachers who want a certificate that’s not only recognized easily in Canada, but globally.’
Stephanie Vogel, from Teaching House, who operate 13 language programs in the region, explains why they accept Cambridge English Teaching Qualifications:
‘In the US, there are a lot of unmoderated programs out there competing with the CELTA and Delta courses. None of them are subject to any sort of external moderation that ensures quality quite like the Cambridge TQs. As an employer, I’m very aware of the difference in quality and readiness for the classroom.’
Marc Kets, Academic Director of EF North America confirms:
‘With only CELTA qualified teachers are we able to implement all of our academic structures and curricula in a positive way for EF.’
CELTA, which celebrates its 30th birthday this year, is a well-established, highly valued qualification in North America. Delta is an advanced blend of theory and practice that helps teachers professionally.
For anyone looking to work as an English language teacher in Canada or the USA the signs are that now is a good time to apply, and those who are holders of Cambridge English teaching qualifications have a real advantage.
