Cambridge Assessment English recently presented the Thakur International School in Mumbai with a range of school equipment for winning the Cambridge English Centenary Competition.
Schools from 70 countries across five continents took part in the competition and Thakur’s award-winning project on ‘Welcome to my Hometown – Mumbai’ involved a month-long programme of activities designed to develop the English language skills of the school’s primary and secondary students. Activities included research, report writing and presentations, leading to an exhibition of students’ work which was turned into a guidebook to Mumbai. Both students and teachers found the project challenging and inspiring – as Grade 6 student Deep Parekh said of the final entry: ‘We all pooled our abilities and created a masterpiece.’
Angela Wright, Global Manager Schools at Cambridge Assessment English said:
‘At Cambridge English we are committed to helping people to learn English more effectively and we find that students who make English part of their daily lives find it much easier to master the language. Thakur International School’s project really stood out from the crowd. The project encouraged students from across the school to use English to carry out real-life tasks. It is these kinds of creative classroom projects that have a huge impact on student motivation, which plays a key role in raising language standards.’
Two runners-up prizes were awarded to Theoretical Lyceum 'D.Cantemir' (Balti, Moldova) and Golden Section School (Moscow).
